New low-temperature phosphate glasses as a host for Europium Ions

2021

Abstract Artificial lightining, especially that of light emitting diodes, and telecommunications are penetrating every part of human lives daily. Different compositions phosphate glasses were suggested as a suitable host material for Eu3+ ions. Here rare earth metal ions act as luminescent centers also perturbing the bond order of phosphate glass network comprised of (PO4)3−, [−(O)PO3]2−, [−(O)2PO2]−, [−(O)3PO] structural units, which is indicated by Raman spectroscopy, confirming successful integration of aforementioned ions into the glass material. Glasses doped with Eu3+ ions show their typical photoluminescence spectra in low symmetry environment, consisting of the highest intensity 5D0…

Soluble Heterometallic Coordination Polymers Based on a Bis-terpyridine-Functionalized Dioxocyclam Ligand

2010

Soluble homo- and heterometallic coordination polymers containing transition metal cations (Cu(2+), Fe(2+), Co(2+), and Ni(2+) ions) were prepared in a two-step procedure using a polytopic bis(terpyridine)dioxocyclam ligand 1H(2) (dioxocyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-5,7-dione). These supramolecular systems incorporate two different metal complexes, the metal cations being located both between two terpyridine units and in the macrocyclic framework. The characterization of these soluble architectures was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, mass spectrometry, viscosimetry, and UV-vis absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. Our results clearly indicate t…

Hexanuclear manganese(III) single-molecule magnets based on oxime and azole-type ligands

2019

Abstract Two novel hexanuclear manganese(III) complexes belonging to the Mn6 family of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), of formulae [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(bta)2(EtOH)6]·2EtOH·4H2O (1) and [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(pta)2(EtOH)6]·4EtOH (2) [H2N-saoH2 = salicylamidoxime, bta = 1,2,3-benzotriazolate anion, pta = 5-phenyl-tetrazolate anion], have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Both compounds crystallize in the triclinic system with space group P 1 ¯ (1 and 2). In their crystal packing, adjacent Mn6 complexes are connected through non-coordinating solvent molecules, which are H-bonded to N atoms of azole rings and –NH2 groups of salicylamidoxime ligand. The study of t…

Functionalized phosphonates as building units for multi-dimensional homo- and heterometallic 3d-4f inorganic-organic hybrid-materials.

2016

Using the multifunctional ligand H4L (2,2'-bipyridinyl-5,5'-diphosphonic acid), a new family of inorganic-organic hybrid-materials was prepared. The ligand shows a very high flexibility regarding the coordination mode, leading to a large structural diversity. The compounds 1a, 1b ([M(H2L)(H2O)4]·2.5H2O; M = Co(2+) (a), Ni(2+) (b)), 2 ([Gd2(H2H'L)2(H2H'2L)(H2O)6]Cl4·14H2O), 3a, 3b, 3c ([MCo(iii)(H2L)3(H2O)2]·6.5H2O; M = Gd(3+) (a), Dy(3+) (b) and Tb(3+) (c)), and 4 ([GdNi(ii)(H2L)3(H2O)3]NaCl·6H2O) were isolated and characterized with single crystal X-ray diffraction. Depending on the used metal ions and on the stoichiometry, either discrete entities (0D), extended 2D layers or 3D frameworks…

6-Polyamino-substituted quinolines: synthesis and multiple metal (CuII, HgIIand ZnII) monitoring in aqueous media

2019

Chemoselective palladium-catalyzed arylation of polyamines with 6-bromoquinoline has been explored to prepare chelators for the detection of metal cations in aqueous media. The introduction of a single aromatic moiety into non-protected polyamine molecules was achieved using the commercially available Pd(dba)2/BINAP precatalyst to afford nitrogen chelators, in which the aromatic signalling unit is directly attached to the polyamine residue. Water-soluble receptors were then synthesized using N-alkylation of these polyamines by hydrophilic coordinating residues. By combining rich photophysical properties of the 6-aminoquinoline unit with a high coordination affinity of chelating polyamines a…

Structural and metallo selectivity in the assembly of [2 × 2] grid-type metallosupramolecular species: Mechanisms and kinetic control

2011

An unsymmetrical bis(tridentate) ligand LH in which one binding site can be readily deprotonated forms a kinetically inert [Co(III)L(2)](+) complex which can be used as a "corner" species for the "Coupe du Roi" assembly of trans,trans-[Co(2)M(2)L(4)](6+) metallogrids (M = Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)). In the mixed Co(III)/Co(II) species, the oxidation states appear to be localised. In solution, the ligand LH forms octacationic, homometallic [2 × 2] grids with the individual labile metal ions Fe(II), Co(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), seemingly as mixtures of all possible isomers arising from the unsymmetrical nature of the ligand. In the solid state, however, [Zn(4)L(4)](CF(3)SO(3))(8)·4CH(3)CN cry…

Electrochemically-driven conformational shift in mono- and di-copper constrained macrotricyclic cyclen receptors

2008

International audience; An electrochemical study of mono- and di-copper constrained cyclen macrotricycles is presented. Electrochemical data in DMF solution indicate that the reduction of dinuclear complexes occurs in two steps in the -0.4 to -0.8 V vs.AgCl/Ag potential range yielding CuII CuI and CuI CuI species further reduced to Cu metal at highly negative potentials. Mononuclear complexes are reduced in two steps to CuI and Cu metal. Electrochemical data suggest that reduction of both mononuclear and dinuclear complexes approach a square scheme involving electrochemically-driven conformational shifts for metal ions. The presence of endo- and exo-forms of the complexes are revealed by ch…

Trace elements in the thermal groundwaters of Vulcano Island (Sicily)

2000

The chemical concentrations of many trace elements that have never before been examined in Vulcano Island groundwaters are reported. Chemical data indicate that rock composition is not the only factor determining the metal content in the aqueous system. The observed concentrations depend mainly on: (1) the chemical composition of the host rocks; (2) the chemical–physical conditions of the weathering solution (temperature, acidity, redox conditions); (3) input of magmatic gases; (4) adsorption of metal ions on oxide particles, formation of soluble complexes and/or precipitation of solid phases. Chloride complexes in solution are of minimal significance for all elements with the exception of …

General Aspects of Metal Ions as Signaling Agents in Health and Disease

2020

This review focuses on the current knowledge on the involvement of metal ions in signaling processes within the cell, in both physiological and pathological conditions. The first section is devoted to the recent discoveries on magnesium and calcium-dependent signal transduction—the most recognized signaling agents among metals. The following sections then describe signaling pathways where zinc, copper, and iron play a key role. There are many systems in which changes in intra- and extra-cellular zinc and copper concentrations have been linked to important downstream events, especially in nervous signal transduction. Iron signaling is mostly related with its homeostasis. However, it is also …

Analytical insight into degradation processes of aminopolyphosphonates as potential factors that induce cyanobacterial blooms

2017

Aminopolyphosphonates (AAPs) are commonly used industrial complexones of metal ions, which upon the action of biotic and abiotic factors undergo a breakdown and release their substructures. Despite the low toxicity of AAPs towards vertebrates, products of their transformations, especially those that contain phosphorus and nitrogen, can affect algal communities. To verify whether such chemical entities are present in water ecosystems, much effort has been made in developing fast, inexpensive, and reliable methods for analyzing phosphonates. However, unfortunately, the methods described thus far require time-consuming sample pretreatment and offer relatively high values of the limit of detect…
